The most mysterious and disturbing of the great master's films, it is a highly original analysis of the social situation of Italian women. The protagonist, played by Gilulietta Masina, accidentally discovers that her husband is cheating on her. The woman, who has devoted her entire life to the man she loves, experiences a shock. Under his influence, she begins to have strange visions. She is visited by eerie figures personifying her mounting anxiety. These events culminate in a night spent alone at home by Giulietta. Terrifying apparitions make her realize the emptiness of her existence and give her the strength to liberate herself...
