Ivo Salvini (Roberto Benigni) is released from a psychiatric hospital where he was committed due to his obsession with the moon. He tries to seduce the alluring Aldine, but she remains indifferent to his advances. His disappointment is compounded by the fact that Ivo begins to identify his chosen one with the moon, the source of his suffering and frustration. During his repeated attempts to win the girl's heart, the hero encounters a diverse cast of characters (a musician sleeping in a cemetery, a man meditating on rooftops, a former prefect gripped by persecution mania), finds himself in various strange places, and becomes entangled in extraordinary adventures. One of the characters we meet is Gonella, a paranoid ex-prefect. Gonella (Paolo Villaggio) appoints Ivo as his right-hand man, and together they set out to unmask a "wild conspiracy."
